Herbal Nutrition Supplements and You
Nutritional supplements are products that are intended to supplement or complement one’s diet. This means that nutritional supplements are not meant to replace actual food but rather to supplement whatever nutritional requirement a person’s diet lacks. Nutritional supplements may contain any of the following dietary ingredients:
a. A vitamin
b. A mineral
c. An herb or any plant (excluding tobacco)
d. An amino acid
e. A dietary substance that could increase appetite , or
f. A concentrate, metabolite, constituent, extract, or a combination of any of the aforementioned
Since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies herbal natural supplements as food rather than drugs, the FDA does not pre-approve dietary supplements based on their safety and efficacy. Rather, the FDA requires the manufacturers to ensure that their products are safe before they go to the market. The FDA can only take action on manufacturers after they have placed unsafe nutritional products on the market.
Dietary supplements are allowed to make broad claims that the product can support the structure or function of the body like, “Glucosamine helps maintain healthy joints” or “The hormone melatonin promotes normal sleep patterns”. These claims must be substantiated though and the FDA must be notified of these claims within 30 days of their first use.
A good rule of thumb is to keep yourself safe. Before taking in anything, seek medical advice or consult medical studies to see whether the so-called active ingredient in the supplement is indeed effective and safe. Even herbal nutrition supplements or those labeled as natural could have dangerous side effects when taken with prescription drugs. Also, evaluate your diet and eating habits. You may already be getting enough recommended daily allowances your body needs so you don’t really need any more herbal nutrition supplements.
