Most people say they would rather exercise with someone instead of by themselves. I have to be honest with you, I am the same way. I would much rather workout with a partner then by myself any day. I really enjoy the company and conversation. What if you do not have that option to workout with someone? What are your options? Well if you have a dog you are in luck. I have never known a more faithful, committed and better accountability partner then a dog. If you get into a routine running with a dog, that dog will make sure to remind you every day that it is time to run.
People are flaky. People will sleep in. People will play hooky. People will not show up. But a dog, a dog will do none of those things. If a dog knows that every morning it is time to go outside for a run, then you better believe that that dog is going to be ready to go, no matter what. Whether there is rain, snow, sun or natural disaster that dog will be ready for the run.
Here is the thing; you need to have the right dog. You will know if your dog is right to form a workout partnership with. If it is a 5 pound dog and cannot run as fast as you can walk, that is not ideal. Make sure your dog and keep up, or better yet you have to keep up with your dog.
Plus we all know that dogs need exercise just as much as we do. If you spend your time walking your dog, then turn that time into a workout session for both of you. You are already spending time walking the dog; make it count for you too.
Here is how to get your dog excited about working out with you if your dog does not already freak out when you grab the leash. Talk to your dog. Tell him verbally that it is workout time. He will get used to the word workout and start to get excited about it in the future. Using a word like workout or exercise is better than using a more common word like walk, because when some dogs hear that trigger word there is no stopping their excitement. Grab the leash and put it on your dog as you are talking with him. Go on the run and at the end give your dog a treat. This will get your dog excited everyday for the run and soon your dog will come barking for you when he knows that it is time to start working out.
I am telling you the truth. There is no better or more faithful workout partner then your dog. If you have a dog and have been looking for the inspiration to exercise daily, it is sitting right underneath your nose. Plus you will have a friend to workout with. You will not have to be alone. The workout partnership will benefit you as well as your dog. You will both be happier in life.
